West Bengal was once home to the capital of British India, Kolkata. It was the hub of change and revolution, involving both sides of the coin. When it saw the destruction of local handloom industries and the rich and vivid handicraft industry of Bengal and the country as well, it also witnessed the uprising revolution against the British rule, in addition to this.

Handloom industries have forever been famous in West Bengal. Shantipur Handloom Industry is a handloom weaving industry in Nadia district, West Bengal. One of the foremost handloom centres of India, it is famous for the production of cotton saris.


The culture of Bengal mainly revolves around cotton sarees, fish curry and roshogolla (sweet dish specifically particular to Bengal) , and “saat shak r shabji “ . Bengali sarees have numerous varieties- korial , garad , taant , Murshidabad silk , dhakai jamdani , baluchari and tussar . Dhaniakhali sarees are made of pure cotton. Getting its name from a village in Hooghly district, it comprises hundred meters of cloth. Another facet is the rich literary heritage of West Bengal. The works of Rabindranath Tagore , Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay , Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay embellish the richness of Bengali literature .
