As a prenatal counsellor, I see expecting parents really excited about bringing their babies into this world and wanting only the best for them. Dealing with expecting couples through the pregnancy I know both sides of the story. I know in depth how helpless a newborn is and that it cannot survive without its parents. It takes just a few seconds to cut the umbilical cord but the connection between a mother and child is a connection for life. When a child starts exploring life beyond the realms of its home, it is the father’s guiding hands that lead the child into the real world. For children, it is as scary as stepping into a world of dragons and dungeons, the mother’s love internally fuels the child’s self-esteem while the father’s unconditional support helps the child channelize their internal strength to make a place for themselves in the world. It’s a perfect balance. If that balance is tipped, then the child’s mind is shaken up. Their self-worth is built on quicksand and is ready to collapse in a second when circumstances and life test them. For some parents, testing circumstances either from the past, present or the future gets to them and tips their mental health which then interferes with the normal and healthy development of the children.

Women and children especially children are more prone to abuse because they are innocent, naïve, financially dependent and powerless in an adult world. Verbal, mental, emotional, physical and sexual abuse in childhood can lead to stunted self-esteem, zero self-worth and distorted personality development in children. Childhood abuse can result in depression, anxiety attacks, addiction and suicidal tendencies along with various other mental health conditions. Their own beaten and shattered self-esteem makes them bitter and angry. Their ability to form and maintain healthy personal relationships are destroyed as they may approach close personal interactions with fear of getting hurt because of their abusive past.

My book titled Breaking Free Embracing Me “ healing from childhood abuse and toxic conditioning “ takes the victims of abuse through understanding classical conditioning and punishments which they were subjected to in their past. The book also throws light on a lesser known yet common type of personality disorder called BorderLine Personality Disorder which is on the rise. Individuals with Borderline personality disorder are often mixed up with people having Narcissistic Personality Disorder or Bipolar Disorder. The good news is that therapy and early intervention can cure an individual with Borderline Personality Disorder and enable them to live a near normal life with stable relationships and a steady career.
“Heal before you have children so that your children don’t have to pay for the baggage that you carry from your abusive past.”
