Are onscreen antics sliding into real-life behaviour?
By Abhishek Haridasan
Cinema is a wonderful medium to connect with people who perform characters that are close to our hearts. Cinema is a reflection of many ways in which societies function and the values that people behold!
With unparalleled entertainment value, good cinema impacts societies positively, however, I wonder if an imaginary line has been crossed and boorish antics are blending into normal lives.
People’s reactions and anger management seem to be determined by lusty blows and shocking block-stained scenes online. There’s also a discussion of how different genders are misrepresented by directors and shoddy screen time provided to female leads in films across the globe!
Has cinema also influenced falling in love and the harsh treatment meted out to partners when things go awry? While many might debate about the openness witnessed in societies in terms of expressing emotions, we are also laying bare when we see so many people reacting with rage when encountered with situations, rather than assessing and finding amicable outcomes.
While pointing fingers towards a certain genre wouldn’t be right, I am made to think hard about the claimed value of investing time in watching movies that are brainless, outlandish and gravity-defying which bends many minds towards ludicrousness.
The hope remains that people view cinema for entertainment, and when certain genres of movies/series are made which make us stand up, applaud and think, we must acknowledge the good work, too!
Cinema could be a double-edged sword for millions. It’s the soft power of a country and can get us into debates of learning from investing time in watching people on screen.
While we wait for an intelligent verdict, let’s rise as a good samaritan and use our judgment to make wise decisions for ourselves. Let’s avoid getting influenced and sharpen our intellect by assessing, thinking and wisely making decisions.
Cinema is around to entertain us! We should veer towards the side of positivity and betterment.
Be civil, and let’s create a better world together!
