Literature and Society
Literature is one of the most basic and pristine reflections of society. Society is a social institution, solely framed and constituted by humans. The central rules keep on changing, from time to time. When an individual writes something based off reality, or some situation set really close to a real-life situation. Literature and society are integrately linked. The famous play by Kalidasa titled “Abhijnana Shakuntalam “borrows its story from the epic Mahabharata, yet reflected a social scenario of the contemporary society – Shakuntala’s fidelity being questioned, and her character being judged by the very man who had loved her once.
Movies, dance, music and other forms of art are more than mere forms of representation . The means of expression is more like bringing the reality to life, therefore linking reality and illusion. Illusion is generally visual and virtual, but when it is kind of based on the reality it becomes a bit more believable, closer to the world that we really dwell in. Ancient Sanskrit plays and works are still glorified and celebrated, because of the recurring themes of the social ills and happinesses. If social ills don’t get reflected in literature , there is no proper way to represent them .
