Healthcare and Education : the future of India by Promila Devi Sutharsan Huidrom
As we see our country we find that ensuring health and education for every citizen is a moral imperative that defines a nation’s character. In India, the current chasm between elite private care and struggling public facilities highlights a systemic failure to treat well-being as a fundamental birthright. When healthcare becomes a luxury commodity, it creates a predatory environment where life-saving procedures are restricted to those with significant financial means.
We see that the «classification» of patients in private hospitals—where care is tiered based on wealth—suggests that a wealthy life is inherently more valuable than a laborer’s. While the defense forces maintain excellent, government-funded medical infrastructure for operational readiness, this high standard of care should be the blueprint for the entire civilian population. Access to healing should never be determined by the thickness of one’s wallet.
To bridge this divide, we must reapproach our fiscal philosophy. The current reliance on narrow tax slabs is insufficient for universal welfare. A more sustainable strategy is a universal tax contribution. By taxing everyone—even a nominal, symbolic amount from the lower class—the government can cultivate a massive collective fund. When hundreds of millions contribute, the individual burden remains light while the national treasury becomes powerful enough to dismantle financial barriers.
Transitioning to a system of free, high-quality healthcare and education would eliminate the fear of medical bankruptcy. If funded through this revamped tax structure, the distinction between “classes” in hospitals would evaporate. A citizen would be treated as a human being in need of healing, not as a category of ward.
Similarly, education must be liberated from affordability. As a tool for wisdom and leadership, it should be a birthright for every child. By ensuring everyone contributes a little, the state can ensure that every person receives the essential tools to thrive, prioritizing human dignity above all else.
