LETS KNOW MORE ABOUT JAMINI ART

Painter Jamini Roy was from India. In 1954, the Indian government bestowed upon him the Padma Bhushan award. He is still among the most well-known students of the highly regarded Indian artist and teacher Abanindranath Tagore. The “bazaar” paintings that are offered for sale as talismans at Indian temples had an impact on Roy’s highly simplified, flattened-out style, which is reminiscent of European modern art.In 1938, Jamini Roy’s paintings were first displayed in Calcutta (Kolkata) on British India Street. His appeal reached unprecedented heights in the 1940s, when his primary audience consisted of Europeans and the middle class Bengali population. His artwork was shown in London in 1946 and in New York in 1953. In 1954, he received the Padma Bhushan.

His art is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and has been widely displayed in international exhibitions. He resided and worked in Calcutta for the majority of his life. He began by experimenting with Kalighat paintings but soon realised that it was no longer just a “patua” and went to study with country people.
