“Whispers on Wisteria Lane”
By Abhishek Haridasan
The old clock tower struck midnight as the wind whispered secrets through the empty streets.
In the heart of the town, a flickering lantern lit up only one window—Number 13 on Wisteria Lane.
Inside, Mira clutched a letter she never remembered writing, sealed with a symbol she’d never seen.
Just as she reached to open it, the shadows in the room seemed to breathe.
Was she experiencing paranormal activity? How could this be possible? Mira tried tearing the letter, but she couldn’t get through the edges. She felt a pull on her right wrist, which startled her from within. A tug-of-war broke about between her and the spirit that was preventing her from opening the letter. After a few minutes, she relented and let go, only to find the letter not falling down on the ground, but remaining suspended in air. She shrieked and clasped the blanket and hid underneath, shaken from within. As she breathed heavily under the blanket, she heard a voice saying, ‘Mira, que tal?’ Was that Spanish or Portuguese she was hearing.
‘ Spirit or whoever you are, I understand only English.’, she said in a squeamish voice. ‘Reveal yourself, I can’t watch faceless things move.’
‘Do not worry. I am a friendly person!’, said the voice which frightened Mira a little more. The English was heavily accented, but Mira could understand it. A peek from the blanket made Mira realize that everything was clear. Now, to find where the letter and the spirit have gone.
Outside the window, or maybe into the large kitchen, this spirit did have a purpose, and the letter, too, had some special meaning in her life. The encounter with this spirit was going to change Mira’s life forever!
