Bharatiya Janata Party Secures Power in West Bengal, Marking Major Victory in Crucial State Polls

In a major political shift, Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken control of West Bengal, long governed by the opposition All India Trinamool Congress.

According to partial results released by the Election Commission of India, the BJP secured at least 124 seats in the 294-member विधानसभा and was leading in 83 more, with final results expected later in the day.

The outcome marks a significant breakthrough for the BJP, which had spent years attempting to unseat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has led the state since 2011 and emerged as one of Modi’s strongest critics.

Addressing supporters at the party headquarters in New Delhi, Modi hailed the results as a turning point. “A new chapter has been added to Bengal’s destiny,” he said, highlighting the party’s expanding footprint in a region where it previously struggled.

The elections were not without controversy, as opposition parties alleged irregularities after millions of voters were reportedly removed from electoral rolls.

The results are expected to reshape opposition dynamics nationally, with Banerjee’s defeat potentially weakening efforts to build a united front against the BJP. Meanwhile, elections were also held in three other states as part of India’s staggered electoral cycle across its 28 states and eight union territories.
