A Brain Doctor is also needed
We live in a world where physical health is extensively prioritized. When there is a broken bone, we rush to an orthopedic surgeon. When there is a troubled heart, we book an appointment with a cardiologist. When vision is blurred, an ophthalmologist is just a call away. Yet, when the brain, which is arguably the most complex and vital organ in the human body, begins to struggle, we do something baffling: we stay silent.
Why is that so with most of us?
The brain is not just another organ. It governs every thought we think, every emotion we feel, every decision we make, and every relationship we build. It controls our sleep, our appetite, our ability to love, and our ability to function. With roughly 86 billion neurons firing in intricate patterns every second, it is the most sophisticated structure ever known to science. Furthermore, when this extraordinary organ needs help, society whispers, judges, and looks away.
Mental health struggles, whether anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or any other condition, are not signs of weakness. They are medical realities, no different from diabetes or hypertension. Just as a malfunctioning kidney requires a nephrologist, a struggling brain requires a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is, at the most fundamental level, a brain doctor — a trained medical professional who understands the biology, chemistry, and complexity of mental illness and who knows how to treat it.
The stigma which is surrounding mental health is not just unfair — it is dangerous. It silences people who are suffering. It delays treatment that could save lives. It convinces individuals that they must “tough it out” when what they truly need is professional care. Would we tell someone with a fractured spine to “think positively”? Of course not. So why do we say it to someone battling depression?
Visiting a psychiatrist is not something to be ashamed of. It is one of the most courageous, self-aware, and responsible things a person can do for their health. It is an act of respect toward your own mind.
Your brain works tirelessly for you every single day. It is time we return the favor — without shame, without hesitation, and without any stigma.
Live for yourself; then you will live for your loved ones who really care for you!!!
