EMERGENCY It was a bright, sunny morning. Neha was getting ready for office. Her office was located in Ballygunj. It was an IT company, based in Kolkata itself. She had to work from nine to five. She was a twenty-five-year-old employee, who was living far off from her family in a lavish flat in Panchasayar. The flat was two bhk. She had a younger sibling, Shivam.
He was in his final year of college. He was an engineering student. It was a Monday morning. However, she suddenly received a call from her brother. Her mother had been hospitalized at Manipal Hospital, Salt Lake. She was a patient of diabetes. Seema was a full-on housewife. She loved her children way too much.
As she was going towards her office, she called her colleague up and informed her regarding her absence, which needed to be reported to the supervisor. Post booking the cab, she remembered her childhood memories. The memories of her childhood spent in their flat at Salt Lake flooded across her eyes, in the form of a watery barrier. As she reminisced her memories, she recollected how her mother used to narrate stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata to them. The story of Karna, especially, always intrigued her. The crisis of an individual’s identity is truly complex, she thought to herself. The little Neha Roy would have asked this young employee, when did she decide to leave her family behind? When did her world entirely shift from private to public?
Reaching the hospital at around ten am in the morning, she finally met her younger brother after twelve long months. They both reached towards the ICU , to see their mother sitting up, clad in a blue hospital robe, a bit more stable. Neha hugged her mother impulsively, promising to never ever leave her ever. Sometimes, certain emergencies are crucial for us to realize the importance of time, and our loved ones- family and friends. Her mom suffering from a mini cardiac arrest made her realize how much she loved her single mother and mother.
PS . Three months later, she was working as a freelancer from her home, happily settled with her nuclear family.
