An act of mismanagement learned from the Kolkata Durga Puja Stampede : by Promila Devi
In a highly populous country like India, we know that festivals are meant to bring people together in devotion and celebration, but poor crowd management can turn joy into tragedy. On October 17, 2026, a crowd crush occurred at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata, West Bengal. Nineteen people were killed and at least 25 were injured. Reports indicate heavy rain, overcrowding, narrow movement routes and a public announcement warning about the pandal contributed to a sudden surge. In all this the responsibility remains under investigation.
Such tragedies are not inevitable. They can often be prevented through planning, crowd control and emergency response.
We must know that before a large festival, organisers and authorities should assess how many visitors the venue can safely accommodate. Also the entry and exit routes must be separate, clearly marked, well lit and wide enough for emergencies. Emergency exits should remain unlocked and unobstructed. Police, security personnel and volunteers must be properly trained. CCTV cameras and real-time crowd monitoring can help authorities stop entry before an area becomes dangerously congested. Medical teams, ambulances, fire services and emergency evacuation plans should also be ready. Weather forecasts must also be monitored at all times.
We must keep in mind that during an emergency, communication becomes crucial. Organisers should avoid alarming or confusing announcements that may cause people to move suddenly. Trained personnel should calmly direct visitors towards safe exits while preventing people from entering against the outgoing flow. Emergency corridors must be kept clear for rescuers and ambulances. Visitors should follow official instructions and avoid pushing or rushing.
We also have to make sure that after an accident, the priority must be given to rescue team and medical treatment team. Authorities should establish safe access for ambulances, provide first aid, identify victims and inform families. Hospitals should be alerted immediately. CCTV recordings and other evidence should be preserved so that investigators can determine what went wrong.
Finally, every major incident should lead to stronger safety standards. Authorities must examine failures, establish accountability and apply the lessons to future gatherings. Faith and celebration should never come at the cost of human life. Good preparation, responsible management and coordinated emergency services can ensure that festivals remain places of devotion, community and joy and such accidents should be prevented by doing the proper planning and management.
