Calamity of the State by Riddhima Sen
The recent floods in Assam have wrought a lot of havoc. People have lost their homes overnight and their lives have been uprooted within a few seconds. They have lost whatever they had build for years, homes built with love and care and ambition. Natural calamities are a danger far greater than any man-made disaster. No one knows when a natural disaster can actually strike, unlike artificial disasters. The efforts put in by various non-government organizations are going a mile ahead in helping the victims of the disaster. Steps should have been taken by the government to help the needy.
India is a third world country which has a wide socio-economic gap between the various stratas of the society. The economic difference between the privileged and the under privileged is something which cannot be bridged easily. However, attempts can be made to bridge this gap by ensuring that each individual has access to equal opportunities, regardless of their social standing and position economically. Equal opportunities at education helps a lot along the way too. With the power of education, people can be empowered to a significant extent. The progress of the nation will only be possible when there are no social divisions.
