The Indian Paralympics Feat! by Abhishek Haridasan

29 medals and a mountain of dreams achieved! When the news of the Paralympics conclusion was read, I scrolled down through the tally of medals that we achieved. I used the word ‘We’ because the nation is proud of every para-athlete who gave their best and helped the nation with a medal haul that was better than every edition in the past.
Should we be surprised? I’d be careful to be a critic because para-athletes go through their share of trials, chides and so much more! But inside them lies the vigor to succeed and make a name for themselves.
If you’ve been following the games via highlights and Instagram posts, one would realize all that they have given despite being challenged within their bodies, yet their spirit cannot be doused.
What can regular individuals learn from them?
Being blessed with an able body can be a boon, yet people talk about the bane and misery. Rather than focusing on what can be done with the inherent abilities each one of us possesses, we deviate towards aspects beyond our control.
Lesson 1: Impossible is a word created by those who weren’t around when achievements were made
Lesson 2: When things are fine, we don’t count our blessings. When we are challenged, we begin to search for a better picture, not realising that the sketch we had in our mind can be bettered!
Lesson 3: Inspiration needn’t be telecasted from people around us. The heights of ignorance need to be replaced by the peaks of success
Lesson 4: Judgements are for pansies. First impressions are aforesaid words. Let an individual traverse through the journey of finding their true worth. Everyone is capable of amazing things
Lesson 5: Be a cheerleader, rather than a detractor. The world needs people who believe in every ounce of cell that makes up each body of the world. Support, empower and watch magic unfold!
This edition of the Paralympics is a watershed moment for India, and we must rise, bow, and respect the achievements of our para-athletes. They’ve succeeded in bringing happiness to billions of Indians. Let’s remember, they and millions like them are India’s treasure.
