Jane Austen was one of the most profound female authors in Victorian England. Pride and Prejudice is one of the most read classics till date. The way societal norms and hierarchies are depicted in the novel speak volumes about what was expected of women back then. Girls were expected to either marry or become governesses, and the Benett sisters were supposed to get married off eventually. Here’s where the character of Elizabeth Benett gets fleshed out. Elizabeth Benett is a character who stands up for herself in times when hardly anything was expected of her. Her relationship with Darcy, is quite complex in nature.
Sense and Sensibility, on the contrary, is a story of navigating through love, heartbreak and social satire. The social status of women in the English society was only limited to marriage and production of children in order to carry the lineage forward. Elinor and Marianne view the world differently, one through the lens of rationality and other through the lens of love. This tassle between emotion and logic is a subject debated upon for long. The presentation of this very topic is something which is constant , yet in flux , because it changes across centuries .
